Description / Expertise
A fine George III mahogany bow fronted wall shelf with fretwork fashioned sides in the Chinese Chippendale manner, with two shelves, the top with scrolling horizontal brackets and a lower bow fronted shelf with two drawers below, fitted with bone knob handles and lower shaped brackets. The shelf is of superb quality throughout and has a rich dark colour.
The fretwork design of this shelf corresponds closely to that shown in Christopher Gilberts book, “The Life and works of Thomas Chippendale” which indicates the inspiration behind the design of this piece, various pointers could date it to approximately 1770, however with a bow front to the drawers, this leads us to believe in fact that they were made towards the end of the 18th century.
