Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery

Rebecca Hossack is the Director of three internationally-renowned galleries - two in central London and one in New York.

Now in its twenty-eighth year, the Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery champions originality in contemporary Western and non-Western art. Celebrating and promoting inclusiveness and innovation, the gallery has pioneered exhibitions of Aboriginal art in London, as well as curating important collections from Papua New Guinea, tribal India and the Bushmen of the Kalahari. The Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery also advocates contemporary western artists who resist the dominant trends of the modern art world, exploring how arts and crafts can collaborate by showcasing a diverse array of media. The gallery is renowned for discovering talent and starting trends in contemporary art.

Following a degree in Law and a BA majoring in the History of Art, Hossack studied at Christie's and at The Guggenheim in Venice. She served as the Australian cultural attaché in London from 1993-7, initiating literary links between Australian and British writers and organising a series of exhibitions of Australian art in London. She sits on the board of LAPADA and is a Trustee of Resurgence, the influential periodical of alternative thought. Hossack was the first Conservative Councillor in Bloomsbury for over 20 years, during which time she ran the New York Marathon to raise £20,000 to plant trees in central London.

Hossack also writes regularly in the national press and lectures internationally on Aboriginal art, contributing to the Macmillan Dictionary of Art (1996) and the Oxford History of Western Art (2000). She has curated many exhibitions of Aboriginal and non-Western art both in the UK and worldwide, working closely with the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Bristol City Art Gallery, the Harrogate Art Gallery, the Horniman Museum, Leicester City Art Galleries, and the De Young Museum in San Francisco. Hossack also campaigns to preserve rock art in Western Australia's Burrup peninsular.

To further the relationship between Eastern and Western cultures, the gallery regularly hosts poetry-readings and academic-led talks. As well as monthly exhibitions in its three spaces, the gallery has a very active extra mural presence throughout London - including exhibitions at The Third Space gyms in Soho and Marylebone, the Marylebone Hotel and 20 pop-up galleries in London's Gail's Bakeries.
