On any given Saturday in 1983 my 10 year old self was out of bed at 6am and ready to make the long drive to a country antique shop or auction to buy antique furniture. Experience had taught me not to roll over and go back to sleep as my Father would only ever call me once before he left. When he was gone, he was gone and I would've missed my chance for another week.
It's not often someone my age has over 30 years of experience in any business but back in 1983 I had no idea that those 6am calls would allow me to turn my fascination for beautiful antique and mid century furniture into a thriving business. I learned through osmosis, surrounded by incredible furniture in my childhood home. Unwittingly, my apprenticeship happened while I was hanging out with my Dad on School holidays and Saturday mornings. I left school and then left Ireland to work and travel.
At the age of 22 I returned to Ireland after spending time in Barcelona and it was then that I realised I didn't have to wait until Saturday to live my dream. My Father's antique furniture collections had long since outgrown our modest family home and were housed in a warehouse in Lusk, in north county Dublin. In order to pay for their upkeep, Historic Interiors (our sister company) was created to hire out props to Film and TV companies. I eventually took over Historic Interiors from my Father, Matt (he still has an active role in the business) and his core values of honesty, integrity and fanatical customer service are still the back bone of the business.
Mid-Century Online is anchored in these principals today but came about accidentally almost 10 years ago. I had developed a huge personal interest in mid-century modern furniture and naively bought a few beautiful pieces (a Milo Baughman lounge chair, a Paul McCobb Sofa and an incredible burlwood and chrome sideboard from memory) for myself at an Auction in the US, not realising the vast cost of shipping them to Ireland. The only affordable way to get them home was to fill a container. Almost a year later, when I had finally filled that container, I had acquired many more pieces than my home could comfortably accommodate and Mid-Century Online was born.
